From hobby to company
It must be somewhere late in the eighty’s that two Dutch Brothers bought their first VW Campervan. It was a 1976 T2 with an Dormobile pop-top roof. The T2 was in bad condition so with help from some friends they renewed the interior and they patched-up the outside, painted in bright white with fluorescent bumpers and curtains it was ready to roll the brothers including surf-equipment and friends in to the nineties.
After two seasons they want to sell the van and put an add in a newspaper. It was the start of a great hobby, because it was clear there was a lot of demand for a good used VW campervan.
Through the years the bro’s became more serious and they both became managers in the automotive business.
In the meantime they bought and sold several VW campervans. But who wants to have a good job and a nice company car when you are infected with the campervan virus? That is why in 2003 they decided to start a business out of their hobby and Poptop was born.
Once the first T4 california’s where bought and the website was made, the ball was rolling! And it was rolling fast! The first year they sold a 30 VW campervans, mostly early T4’s.
Within half a year it was necessary that they both go full time in their new business named Poptop campers. Now they are selling over 100 campervans a year. Mostly VW Westfalia, all with a pop-top roof. The five years passion and experience made Poptop a leading brand on the Dutch market for compact campervans and accessories.
All Westfalia campers come with a complete service history. A lot of satisfied customers visit the Poptop workshop and showroom in Katwijk, (close to The Hague and Leiden), for regular maintenance to their Poptop or just for a cup of coffee and a check on the offers in the accessories shop.
High discounts for EU buyers?
Not a discount, but probably a nice profit because of the Dutch tax system on our listed prices. Most of the Westfalia campervans we have in stock came from Germany. Because of the high import taxes on new and used cars in the Netherlands it could be useful for our European customers to inform if the car is still not imported to the Netherlands.
A 3 year old California could be about 8000 euro cheaper for you, if its not already registered in the Netherlands! On to 10 years the taxes take off in value. The minimum is 500 euro (depending on the original list-price of the car). Classic cars (25 years and older) are free of taxes.
From Poptop to you?
On a German registered car we can supply a "transito registration" that can be used to drive the car to your country. This registration comes with Dutch documents that can be used to import the car in your country. Inform at your local authorities what you need more! The original German registration is declared invalid. You must arrange the insurance yourself.

A Dutch registered car can only be exported with an "export registration" It also comes with a full set of paperwork to make it possible for you to import the car in your own country.
In both cases we deliver a set of temporary license plates.
